I have now started to carve surface designs into my work while the clay is in a bone dry state rather than leather hard. I am finding that I really like the look of this technique and how much more of a "stone like" appearance the surface takes on. The process is hard on tools, I found that Kemper tools really hold up to the task! Also, have had the most luck using Minnesota Clay Number 7 clay body.
